“When one shines forth, it is like the moon at midday – an event so bright that what is normally hidden outshines even the brightest light. That is what it is like when masters walk among the people. By their presence, they illuminate and gladden all who come their way.”- “Radiance”, 365 Tao Meditations, Deng Ming Dao
Venice Beach circa 1999, Part 1
It was 1999. Young with a passion for photography I was on assignment to photograph people. I chose Venice Beach. With my Nikon F100 and fixed 180mm lens I braved the beach alone and these are the people I found and met. Where are they now? Not sure. But Venice Beach remains the same now as it was then.
Oktober
Venice Beach
October 3, 2010
I love October. Dios de los muertos. Hallowe’en. Fairs and carnivals and amusement parks. Oktoberfest. Oranges. Reds. Yellows. Blacks. Fire. Embers. Ash. The smells of sweet sugar mixed with the spices of the earth: wood, trees, leaves, bark, dirt and rocks… hot glazed from the summer sun cooling from the impending autumn winds…. and in a snap, the cold of winter preserving every bit of memory forged by October. A Full Moon. A Blue Moon. A Black Moon. Native American Music from all tribes. African rhythms and chants. Folklore and mythical tales. These are the things that nail my heart to October. It’s a soothing piercing sensation to have your heart nailed by October. (Originally posted 2006)
Prelude to a Full Moon
Venice Beach tonight. Taking a stroll through the canals with some friends and critters. Lots of amazing houses.
