Bamboo

Today during my morning meditations I was reading a passage out of my 365 Tao book by Deng Ming-Dao

Chopsticks made from bamboo-
Too poor to afford silverware.
Tender bamboo shoots for food-
Too poor to afford meat.

Why were people of old so integrated with their surroundings?
Because the objects that they used, the food that they ate, and
the activities that they engaged in were straight from their surroundings.
They used sticks made from bamboo as eating implements.
They used vines to make baskets. They used gourds as vessels.
For food, they grew plants, domesticated animals, and caught fish and game.
Their social structure was was built around the cycles of the sun, moon, and stars…
The closer we can be to the earth and to nature, the more integrated with life we shall be.

A few hours later I receive an email from Flickr notifying me that my Bamboo photo was chosen for the Huntington Library’s Photo of the Day.

I love my life :)

Shoestring Trio | The Foundry

Shoestring Trio
The Foundry on Melrose
November 14, 2011

A packed house on Shoestring Trio Night at The Foundry is feeding fire to my passions: music, art, and food.
Dinner with band members Robby Marshall, Michael Papillo, and Antoine Salem affirms my belief that there are amazingly good people in the world.

Delicious and Beautiful Food

Grilled Cheese
taleggio / raisin bread / apricot-caper puree
+
Baby Beets and Burrata
balsamic beet puree / hazelnuts / mache
+
Albacore Sashimi
asian pear / hearts of palm / scallions / sambal
2009, Paso a Paso, Verdejo, La Mancha, Spain
+
Beef Tartare
onion sage marmalade / squash / fried egg / rye crisp
+
Sparkling Wine
prosecco

It was a wonderful night out with Ariel and meeting new friends of Robby’s.

Highlights include…
Saying hello to The Foundry founder Eric Greenspan
Experiencing the wonderful warmth of the hostess,
the diligence of the bartender,
the ambiance of the restaurant,
a Food Network-esque atmosphere,
the beautiful sounds of Shoestring Trio
that makes me feel like I am in another era…
A dream come true!

Enjoy the photos!

Fat Albert Einstein | After the Beep

After the Beep
November 10. 2011
Carbon, Culver City

I had a lot of fun catching up with Carmen, Chris V., Jolie, Heather, Carla, Jason, and Chris and everyone.
We were out for Chris V aka Fat Albert Einstein’s record release party for After the Beep.

Vinyl and CD’s  and tapes for sale!
(You probably will be able to buy your copy at Record Surplus where Chris works.)

Fat Albert Einstein

Hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Los Angeles resident Christopher Vagnoni a.k.a. Fat Albert Einstein is a multi-instrumentalist composer/producer with a taste for dusty rhythm driven songs, reminiscent of funky cross genre soundtrack themes. Christopher plays drums and melodica in the dubbers rock band Team Scrub, who was Aloe Blacc’s backing band for a brief stint. As Fat Al, he has worked with Clutchy Hopkins, the Kone and Stoup of Jedi Mind Tricks. Currently signed on Switchstance Recordings, he will be releasing his new project AFTER THE BEEP on 11/11/11.

Raised as a visual artist, drawing, painting and sculpting, music came later in life. “I realized I can apply similar aesthetics used in visual composition in my song composition. I always enjoy getting my hands dirty when I work, so that emotions may be felt in a graphic sense. Live instruments offer me this sensation. Like sculpture and painting, you can feel intention left in the piece, be it through a strong gestural stoke or by taking a breath and pausing, stepping back, so to leave a moment naked and raw in its silence. This is important to me. This is what I know.”

Fat Al is the resident DJ at Largo in Los Angeles, selecting vinyl only sets for a long list of musicians, comedians and actors such as: Sarah Silverman, Jon Brion, Aziz Anzari, Zach Galifanakis, Steve Martin, Louis CK, Larry Coryell, Brad Meldau, Nels Cline, Larry David, Andrew Bird, Adele, Fiona Apple, Jack Black and Will Farrell.

I love my friends!

Fat Albert Einstein – After The Beep – Out now!
11.11.2011 11:11

Greetings,
Today marks a very special day for us. It’s 11/11/11 and we’re excited to present you “After The Beep“, the album of our first non-german artist “Fat Albert Einstein” from Los Angeles. A few years ago Kabanjak dug in the realms of good old MySpace and ran into him. After a bunch of messages both started to work on songs together and this experience will be released next year. But Fat Albert also sent us a record he made during his hitchhikings through the USA. He took answering machine tapes he found in Thrift Stores and layered them over his earthy drums and melodica chants. We were so stoked about this dirty recordings that we decided to put it out. Now it’s here and it’s like a gift we made us ourself for our 10th label anniversary.

I recorded Neil Gaiman, Patton Oswalt, and Zelda Williams when they were in LA  at the Saban Theatre in this summer.
